Every year, Lannigan Field is the host of the Virginia Challenge, which has become one of the most popular track and field meets of the outdoor season. The track boasts 8 48″ lanes with a 36.8m radius, creating a dynamic training atmosphere as well as a fast-paced competition. The field can be lit in the evenings allowing for more use during meets and practices.
All field events are situated within the oval, featuring two long jump lanes with a 179′ runway, two high jump pits, two pole vault boxes, two shot put circles, a javelin runway, and a discus/hammer throw cage. Ever environmentally conscience UVA has installed a subsurface cistern beneath the infield which holds 187,025 gallons (about 707966.31 L) of rainwater, mitigating runoff and providing a source of irrigation for the field.
