Edgar Shannon Library

WELCOME

UVA’s primary library facility, Shannon Library (previously known as “Alderman Library”), underwent a significant renovation from 2020 to 2024 and was reopened on January 8, 2024. The beautifully revamped structure brings the library in line with current safety, accessibility, and service standards. A new entrance has been added, making it easily accessible from the expanding northern corridor along University Avenue, while a larger south entrance improves accessibility from the surrounding grounds. The building now offers improved layout and natural lighting, including two new study courts, catering to the needs of the University community for studying, researching, and socializing. Better wayfinding through signage and design elements enhances the building’s intuitiveness for visitors, and upgraded facilities support the ongoing preservation and conservation of the library’s extensive print collection.

Cherished features like the McGregor (“Harry Potter”) Room have been preserved and enhanced to provide comfort and maintain their unique character. With over 1,400 seats available for research and study, the library accommodates a large number of users.
