Old Cabell Hall, a landmark of the University of Virginia, is home to a historic 851-seat auditorium and the University’s Department of Music. Completed in 1898, the building’s original “public hall” accommodated approximately 1,500 people. Renovations in the late 1990s improved accessibility and seating while reducing the auditorium’s capacity to 851.
The auditorium features a replica of Raphael’s The School of Athens, completed in 1900 by George W. Breck to replace an earlier copy destroyed in the 1895 Rotunda fire. The historic Skinner Organ, a gift from Andrew Carnegie in 1906, was dedicated in 1907 at a recital by renowned organist Samuel Baldwin.
Outside the auditorium, visitors can see The Student’s Progress, a mural by artist Lincoln Perry completed in 2000 as part of the building’s renovation. Today, Old Cabell Hall hosts more than 200 public performances and events each year, including concerts, lectures, and visiting speakers.
Tickets to events at Old Cabell Hall can be purchased through the Arts Box Office website. To see the latest calendar and press releases of music events, check the Concerts and Events page.
